Project Living Proof is a demonstration project of the Metropolitan Energy Center, showing the urban dweller the many opportunities that are available for renovating a house into a sustainable home. Whether you are a homeowner, renter, or builder, this house is Living Proof that we can create a dramatically more efficient and environmentally responsible life in the city.

KITCHEN SKETCH
Old fashion cabinets combine with smart appliances and efficient fixtures for a snappy and functional space. Accessible prep sink is locally manufactured. Renovated maple floor was discovered beneath three layers of sheet flooring.


FIRST FLOOR
Super-insulated walls; original windows renovated with new wood storm sash; certified sustainable harvest hardwood floors, DC lighting powered by PV battery back up; local manufacture light fixtures; kitchen counters of recycled glass; Energy Star appliances; new bathroom with linoleum tile floor; Water Sense efficient plumbing fixtures.


SECOND FLOOR
Renovated bath with salvaged fixtures and provision for future composting toilet; refinished original hardwood floors; walls insulated; original windows renovated with new wood storm sash; wheat straw board cabinets with recycled paper counters; new stair to attic.


ATTIC AND APARTMENT
Super-insulated second floor ceiling; super-insulated apartment walls and ceiling; skylight tubes for daylight; independent mini-split heating and cooling system; operable roof window.


ROOF
Solar electric panels; solar electric powered ventilator; gutters and downspouts redirected from sewer to site use.


BASEMENT
Insulated and moisture controlled floor and walls; high efficiency HVAC systems, both ground-source and air-source heat pumps; whole house HRV (heat recovery ventilator); solar hot water, air-source heat pump hot water, and water heat recovery from HVAC; provision for future compost toilet bin and grey water recovery; high efficiency utility room fixtures.
